Forest McMullin graduated from RIT's School of Photographic Arts and Sciences in 1977, and later served as an adjunct professor at the university. He worked in Rochester, New York as a professional photographer specializing in advertising and editorial photography until 2007. He attended the Visual Studies Workshop at SUNY Brockport and graduated with an M.F.A. in 2007. McMullin has participated in several group and solo exhibitions throughout the country. It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
